Intensive study of a single Dickens novel in its social, historical, and literary context. In summer 2009 the focus will be Dickens's David Copperfield.

The week-long course is offered in conjunction with the Dickens Universe Conference and Summer Institute. The program takes place at Kresge College and includes discussion groups, small seminars and lectures by distinguished international faculty, and other festive events of an appropriately Dickensian nature, including a Victorian Dance. In addition, students will participate in a daily afternoon workshop led by John Jordan (UCSC). Speakers at the Universe include Galia Benziman (UCSC), John Bowen (Univ. of York), Andrew Miller, (Indiana Univ.), Maria Cristina Paganoni (Univ. of Milan), Rosemarie Bodenheimer (Boston College), Murray Baumgarten (UCSC).

* On-campus housing is available for an additional fee. (Contact the Dickens Project directly.)

* Students must have completed reading the novel before beginning the course (the latest Penguin edition of David Copperfield is recommended, as well as Jane Smiley's short biography of Dickens.

* The course begins on Sunday evening, August 2. Monday through Friday, classes start at 8:30 a.m. and finish at 9:00 p.m. Students should pick up information packets and nametags Sunday afternoon Aug. 2, 2-4 at Kresge Piazzetta. * Course Fee: $600 (5 units). May be repeated for credit.

To apply for the Dickens Project (for summer-only students), apply here (beginning March 30) and pay the $10 fee. After three business days you will receive your Student ID Number and password by email. Use those to log on to my.ucsc.edu and enroll in class # 72363, then pay the $600 fee here. Continuing UCSC students just logon to
my.ucsc.edu , enroll for the same class number, and pay the $600 fee.

DEADLINES:  To apply is Wednesday, July 22 and to enroll is Friday, July 24.
