32nd Annual Dickens Universe
Dickens's Bleak House
Instructor: John Jordan, Professor of Literature
UCSC course: LTEL 170F Charles Dickens
Class #TBA
Intensive study of a single Dickens novel in its social, historical, and literary context. In summer 2012 the focus will be Dickens's Bleak House. We will also be celebrating Dickens's 200th birthday (February 7, 1812) with a special performance and other festivities.
The week-long course is offered in conjunction with the Dickens Universe Conference and Summer Institute. The program takes place at College Eight and Porter College and includes discussion groups, small seminars and lectures by distinguished international faculty, and other festive events of an appropriately Dickensian nature, including a Victorian Dance and a one-woman show by actress Miriam Margolyes. In addition, students will participate in a daily afternoon workshop led by John Jordan (UCSC). Speakers at the Universe include John Bowen (Univ. of York), Ian Duncan (UC Berkeley), D. Rae Greiner (Indiana Univ.), George Levine (Rutgers, emeritus), Allen MacDuffie (Univ. of Texas, Austin), Jason Rudy (Univ. of Maryland), Tricia Lootens (Univ. of Georgia), and Catherine Robson (NYU).
