Summer Sustainability Institute 2009

The University of California, Santa Cruz Summer Session is pleased to announce the first Santa Cruz Summer Sustainability Institute (SSI), a program of courses, discussions and possible internships designed to introduce students to the concepts and practices of social and ecological sustainability, and to allow them to pursue selected subjects in greater depth. The Institute reflects growing sustainability-related interest and activity at UC-Santa Cruz and offers students the opportunity to participate in special discussion sections and seminars, explore a variety of projects on campus and around the Monterey Bay Region.
UCSC has a number of on-going and developing programs and projects related to sustainability. These include, among others:

UCSC has a number of on-going and developing programs and projects related to sustainability. These include, among others:

The Institute offers students the opportunity to participate in special evening discussion sections and seminars. Participation in the Summer Sustainability Institute is FREE, although those taking any of the credit courses listed below must pay all the associated tuition fees. Participants also have the opportunity to room together in housing at College Eight but this is not required; for information regarding on-campus housing see

Students should enroll in at least one of the five-credit courses listed below. Although the Institute lasts all ten weeks of Summer Session, you may participate in any combination of just Session I, just Session II, or both Sessions; the maximum enrollment is 15 credits per Session. Enrollment in courses during Summer Session is open to anyone over 18, including non-UCSC students. However, some of these courses do have prerequisites that must be fulfilled in order to enroll for them.

A series of FREE evening seminars, open to students, staff, faculty & the public, will take place Tuesdays, 7-9 PM, offering talks by faculty and other experts on topics related to sustainability. The location is the meeting room at the Program in Community and Ecology, in The Village (Lower Quarry). See Campus Map
