International Student Information 2010

UCSC Summer Session welcomes students from all over the world to join us for the summer!

We will begin accepting International Student Applications on February 8, 2010.

Visa Requirements
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires that students who are enrolling in a full-time course of study apply for an F-1 Student visa. For UCSC Summer Session, full-time enrollment is 10 units or more (in one or both sessions).

1) If you are currently outside the US and plan to attend Summer Session only:
Students will need an I-20 Form (Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 Visa) in order to get an F-1 visa. Students take the I-20 form to a U.S. Embassy or Consulate and apply for an F-1 visa.

For more information about the F-1 visa and SEVIS, review the International Scholar and Student Services (ISSS) web site at http://oie.ucsc.edu/is3/students/prospective.shtml

2) If you already hold F-1 status through UCSC or another American school:
A. If you intend to continue your studies at the school you are presently attending, you do not need to obtain an additional I-20 form to attend UCSC Summer Session.

B. If you do not intend to continue at your current school, you will need to contact our International Office (visa@ucsc.edu) to discuss a transfer. Note also, that the program end date on your I-20 form must be after the end of Summer Session. If you need a program extension please contact your schools international student office.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS NEEDING VISAS WILL BEGIN APPLICATION ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2010.
Students needing visas may download the International Application Form (as a PDF) beginning February 8.
(Students NOT needing visas must wait until March 31 to apply to attend UCSC Summer Session.)

Deadline to Apply
The deadline for international students to apply for Summer Session 2010 is Monday, May 17, 2010.  However, we strongly recommend that you apply (and pay your $10 application fee and $200 immigration services fee) by March 30.  This insures that you can register in courses when registration begins on April 19.

Language Requirements
International students who are not native speakers of English may enroll in Summer Session with a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), or equivalent, score as noted below.

TOEFL minimums:
  • Paper-based test - 500 or higher
  • Computer-based - 175 or higher
  • Internet-based (IBT) - 61 or higher
Registration Requirements
International students must register for at least 10 credits (two courses in either one or both sessions) during the summer to be eligible for a student visa. Falling below the minimum requirement of 10 credits will invalidate the visa and require the student to leave the university and country immediately.

Medical Insurance
Proof of medical insurance is required as part of your application package. Be prepared to submit a copy of your health insurance policy or to purchase a policy from the University. UCSC's Student Health Center does offer insurance to summer-only students for $348 (with insurance coverage from June 12 to September 18). The deadline to apply for this insurance is June 12, 2009. For more information call (831) 459-2389, e-mail insure@ucsc.edu or see their brochure online at http://www2.ucsc.edu/healthcenter/billing/insurance.shtml

Proof of Financial Security
The Summer Session requires that all I-20 visa applicants submit a letter from a financial institution or bank statements proving the applicant has sufficient funding. Download the Financial Certificate, a 3 page PDF (not available until February 8, 2010).

Fees
Please note that international students do not pay non-resident tuition for Summer Session attendance. However, there is $10 application fee and an additional fee of $200 for visa-related services. Please include the fee (payable by check or credit card) with the application.  After you register in your courses, you will then need to pay the rest of your tuition, as noted on the Fees Page.

Student Orientation
An orientation for international students will be held at the beginning of Summer Session. Once your enrollment is confirmed, you will be provided further information on this mandatory session. Please e-mail fvisa@ucsc.edu if you have questions about orientation.

English Classes
UC Santa Cruz no longer offers English Language and International Programs (ELI) through UC Santa Cruz Extension.  However several University of California campuses offer such programs, as do other universities and colleges in the Santa Cruz area - you can download a flyer regarding other English Language programs here.
